Chris Lewin

Chair, Infrastructure Working Party

Institute and Faculty of Actuaries

An actuary by profession, Chris has been the chief executive of several of the largest pension schemes in the UK, in both the public and private sectors. His skill-set includes institutional investment and a strong involvement in risk management. For 20 years, until May 2019, Chris led the risk-management initiative between the actuarial and civil engineering professions. This resulted in the publication of the RAMP Guide, which deals with the management of risks in major projects, including the strategic and financial aspects. The 3rd edition emphasises the need for systematic management of uncertainty and of the social and environmental risks in major infrastructure projects around the world. They has also published a Guide to the management of strategic risks. In 2017 they published Major Infrastructure Projects: Key Front-end Issues, and in 2018 a safety guide for owners of existing infrastructure following the Grenfell Tower disaster. For the last 5 years Chris has been the chairman of the Infrastructure Working Party of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, which aims to explore the risks and rewards for financial institutions that invest in infrastructure. One of the current work streams is consideration of the degree of resilience which should be built into projects to make them investable, given uncertainties about the speed and impacts of future climate change and technological advances.
